The importance of bees as pollinators for biodiversity and world nutrition is fundamental to humanity. The United Nations General Assembly has declared 20 May World Bee Day to draw attention to the urgency of protecting bees. Intensive farming, monocultures and the use of pesticides have contributed to a considerable decline in the bee population worldwide.

75% of global food crops depend on pollination, especially by bees. Today, more than 50,000 bee-pollined plant species are used for medical purposes alone. Bees can also find a variety of food sources in the city due to the array of different plants in gardens, cemeteries and parks.

EVVA stands up for the bees and sets a sustainable character with five nations

Photo of beekeeper and EVVA management Due to the marked decline in the global bee population, we decided in 2021 to host five bee colonies with a total of around 300,000 bees at EVVA Vienna. They have found a new home on a sunny, accessible terrace. With this, EVVA aims to raise awareness of respectful use of the limited resources on our planet.

Beekeeper Thomas Zelenka looks after our EVVA bees, who now do their valuable work for their organic honey in the nearby gardens as well as in parks and chestnut alpines. They pollinate around 750 million flowers a year! At the same time, EVVA is bringing employees closer to a piece of nature in the heart of the big city - a project that brings us a lot of joy. The EVVA honey won - a remarkable 184 kilos in 2024 - is now a very popular gift at our events.
